   Preface

The 2007 update of the second edition of the *Clinical Microbiology Procedures Handbook (CMPH)* was developed based on feedback regarding the usefulness of previous editions and its companion volume, *Essential Procedures for Clinical Microbiology*. This update addressed revisions across the sixteen sections of the handbook, with most sections undergoing partial or complete modification through the addition or removal of specific protocols. Sections not revised during this cycle were scheduled for future updates.

The primary objective of CMPH remains unchanged: to support professionals involved in clinical microbiological testing by providing clear and reliable procedures for accurate laboratory practice. The handbook serves as a practical reference, offering detailed, step-by-step instructions for routine bench-level microbiology work.

Similar to the earlier editions, the 2007 update places greater emphasis on molecular diagnostic techniques, bioterrorism preparedness, infection prevention within healthcare settings, and the host immune response to microbial infections. Continued attention is also given to meeting regulatory requirements and managing financial limitations. The procedures were authored by highly experienced laboratory professionals and are formatted in accordance with the CLSI GP2-A guidelines.

All protocols included in CMPH were subjected to thorough review by section editors, the editor-in-chief, and ASM Press editors. Users are encouraged to contribute suggestions for new methods of broad relevance to be considered for inclusions in future updates, thereby supporting ongoing
